Islamic Law in Practice: How Scholars Derive Rulings and Muslims Live Them

Islamic law is not simply a list of rigid rules. It is a rich intellectual tradition grounded in revelation, scholarship, legal theory, and responsible interpretation. Yet many Muslims today still wonder: Why do scholars disagree? How is Islamic law actually derived? And how should Muslims navigate different opinions with clarity and confidence?

This event is designed to answer those questions in a thoughtful, accessible, and practical way.

The event brings together two complementary voices:

Dr. Ahmed Khater will lay the intellectual foundation. As a specialist in Islamic jurisprudence, legal theory (usul al-fiqh), and theology, he will explain how Islamic law is developed, why scholarly disagreement exists, and how authority functions within the Islamic legal tradition.

Imam Joe Bradford will then explore how these principles are lived in the real world. As a practicing imam and mufti, he will discuss how Islamic legal rulings are applied pastorally in mosques, families, and everyday Muslim life in America.

Together, they will show how sound scholarship and lived wisdom work hand in hand.

This program is ideal for:

  • Adults seeking a clearer understanding of Islamic law
  • Students of Islamic studies and religious education
  • Educators and community leaders
  • Serious learners who want a balanced approach to scholarly differences
  • Muslims looking for clarity on how to engage differing opinions without confusion or division

Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of:

  • How Islamic law is derived
  • Why scholars differ
  • How legal theory shapes rulings
  • How Muslims can approach differing opinions responsibly
  • How Islamic law connects to real life in America today

Join us for a meaningful conversation on Islamic law, scholarship, disagreement, and Muslim practice.
